Salinas van Torrevieja in La Mata.
The Salinas of Torrevieja and La Mata are a nature reserve. In the vicinity are also the Salinas Y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar.
The Salinas of Torrevieja and La Mata are popularly called both the Salinas of Torrevieja and La Mata, as well as the Lagunas of Torrevieja and La Mata. Salinas literally translated means salt mines (salina is the Spanish word for salt mine) and refers to the salt mines or salt mining near the port city of Torrevieja. Lagunas literally translated means beach lakes or lagoons (laguna is the Spanish word for beach lake or lagoon) and refers to both large salt lakes. However, both words are used interchangeably to denote these salt lakes (Wikipedia).
The Lagunas Natural Park of Torrevieja and La Mata is located on the municipal territory of the following 4 municipalities:
- Guardamar Del Segura
- Rojales
- The Montesinos
- Torrevieja
The Natural Park is passed in the south by the N-332 motorway and is accessible via the exit at the Torrelamata urbanization. The Visitor Center of the Natural Park is located in an old forest house in the vicinity of the urbanization Torrelamata at 200 meters from the N-332 motorway. The Visitor Centre is closed on Mondays and has adjusted opening hours in high season.
From our apartment El Raso located in Guardamar del Segura you have fantastic views of the Laguna Salade de la Mata. You can relax here and enjoy nature. You can walk and cycle well. We regularly go for a walk with the dogs in the vicinity of the lake. Make sure you have the right shoes on, because it can sometimes be a bit wet on the hiking trails. The nature reserve has several nice observation posts and from there you can spot different bird species. Like, for example, the flamingo. The salinas are a breeding ground and wintering place for many birds.
Recently we also cycled around the lake. This was a nice route, but unfortunately not so suitable for a normal bike. It was doable, but a mountainbike would be more suitable. Lots of sand and rocky roads. As a result, we have slightly adjusted the cycle route, but then you are no longer really around the lake itself. Despite that, the view was still very beautiful. Plus we have covered some extra kilometers .... that wasn't quite the intention :-). We didn't ride our bikes for a few days afterwards. We could laugh with it and were able to see other things in the area. Soon the apartment El Raso will be extensively on our website and then you can also enjoy this beautiful environment.
